Scoring Your Antlers

This is the Boone and Crockett Official Scoring method

For a more through explanation of the Boone and Crockett scoring system and official measuring forms, please visit the official Boone and Crockett website.

The Boone and Crockett definition of a point is, it must be at least 1 inch long and no wider at any place than the points over all length.

The first measurement you would make is the INSIDE SPREAD which is shown by the letter D. The tip to tip (letter B) and greatest spread (letter C) is for your reference and not credible to the over all score. Then you will measure the length of all the points starting with the Main Beam Shown as figure F and all the points shown as G1 through G7. The last measurements you will make is the 4 mass measurements, which is shown as H1 through H4. These measurements are taken at the narrowest place for each of the H measurements. If you now add all these measurements together it will give you the Gross Score of the elk. To get the Net score you must find the difference of each measurement from the left side to the right side, add up the difference, and deduct this from the total gross score. The minimum score for a B&C elk is 360 for the awards and 375 for all time.

When scoring a typical mule deer, their are nine measurements per side plus the inside spread. The first measurement you will make is the length of the main beam shown by the letter F. Then you will measure the length of all the points starting at the G1 through the G4. Next you would take all the mass measurements starting with H1 through H4. These measurments are taken at the narrowest place for each of the H measurements, and last you will take the inside spread credit which is shown by the letter D. The tit to tip spread (letter B) and the greatest spread (letter C) is for your reference and not credible to the over all score. If you now add all these measurements together it will give you the Gross Score of the elk. To get the Net score you must find the difference of each measurement from the left side to the right side, add up the difference, and deduct this from the total gross score. If there are any other non typical points shown as letter E these will also be measured and deducted from the gross score. The minimum score for a B&C typical mule deer is 180 for the awards and 190 for all time.

To score a non typical mule deer you will measure the main typical frame of the buck, which is described by the scoring of the typical mule deer. Then measure all the non typical points on each side shown by the letter E and add them to the score of the typical frame. These non typical points do not get deducted if one side is different from the other as long as the deer is being scored in the non typical category. The minimum score for a B&C non typical mule deer is 215 for the awards and 230 for all time.
